Paul Gustave Doré was born in Strasburg and he was a French Artist. He was also an engraver and illustrator.
He was born in January 6, 1832, and he published his first illustration at age fifteen.
He began work as an illustrator in Paris and was commissioned by Rabelaiz, Balzac and Dante.
He was later commissioned, age 21, by British publishers to illustrate Lord Byron's work and for Edgar Alan Poe's most recognized poems The Raven.
He worked mostly with steel engraving and wood carving. Dore moved to London and signed a five-year contract with the Grant & Co publishers and earned well from the book, London: A Pilgrimage in 1870.
But even though it was a success, it wasn't praised by contemporary critics.
Doré's later works also include Milton's Paradise Lost, The Tempest by William Shakespeare and Thomas Hood's Divine Comedy. He also worked in the Illustrated London News.
Gustave Doré Fine Art is also known other fields such as illustrating some well known fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hod, Puss in Boots, Bluebeard and Cinderella.
Doré had a successful life and kept working until his death in Paris, January 23, 1883.
