Gothic Fairies - The Dark Side of Life
Gothic fairies represent a darker and more introspective side of life. It's important to remember that fairies aren't all goodness and light, and that they have their darker and more grim moments as well. With that in mind, there are plenty of places to see fairies that are far removed from the usual depictions of the sweet and lovely guardians of nature that they are usually shown as.
Fairies, like humans, can portray a significantly darker aesthetic.
When looking at goth art, you might think of the
banshee
, which is a famous Irish fairy. Despite looking like a gorgeous woman with long red hair, her song is a premonition of death to all that hear it. Occasionally, she is known as a washer woman, and if you see her washing your clothes, it is a sure premonition that you will die soon.
Similarly,
the fairies of the Unseelie Court
, the ones who take a distinctly grimmer view of humans are often depicted in Gothic art; they are tall, pale, and often appear swathed in black, though they are quite beautiful as well.

artists, you will find that you have a number of artists to choose from. Some draw and paint fairies of surprising loveliness, even when they are dark and odd, giving them a significantly gothic appeal.
Other artists will occasionally give their fairies a more grungy, urban style, choosing to outfit them in heavy leather boots and ripped fishnets over the more traditional gowns and slippers.
Gothic Looks
If you'd like to adopt a bit of urban gothic fairy into your own look, you'll find that it is fairly simple. You can merely use it to add a little bit of glamor to your regular clothes, or you can go full out and make yourself a great costume.
You can start by getting gothed up however you feel comfortable. A black skirt that has been ripped up and worn out is a good place to start, as are tall black boots. A close fitted black t-shirt with a fun design can top off the outfit, as can a long black coat. You'll find plenty of black nail polish and eyeliner at any place that sells makeup, and a few yards of black lace or tulle makes a great veil.
To finish off the goth fairy look, make yourself a set of great wings. You can start by taking a few wire clothes hangers and bending them into winglike shapes.
Then, take some black fishnet or lace and stretch them over the wing frames that you have created. Don't worry if they get a little ragged and torn, remember that you're going for a look that is more than a little worn. If necessary, sew the fabric to the frames with a few anchoring stitches.
The goth fairy look is a very popular one, so take a look and see what you can get from it!
