Evil Fairies - Malicious and Dark

Evil Fairy by Krystof Ferreira

Evil fairies have a great deal of appeal, and they are often rendered in such a way as their dark natures are revealed but also become quite attractive.

When thinking about fairies, it would be pleasant to only think about the fairies who do you favors, but that would only present a very incomplete picture!

The truth is, there are fairies that are malicious, just like there are fairies that enjoy doing good, and the ones who are of a darker bent of mind can do some serious damage to the world around them. They appear in our stories and our art, and you can see them in many different places.

One of the most notorious subjects of fairy art is the Unseelie court. The Unseelie are tall, taller than humans, and they are very apt to take offense at human ways.

The stories go that they would ride out at night, ten or twenty or more, and grab travelers who were on the road. They would carry these victims into the air and beat them within in an inch of their lives or kidnap them away for hundreds of years.

You'll also find malevolent fairies fairly often in China. For instance, the fox fairies, known as the kitsune, are quite troublesome, and though they can sometimes be persuaded to do good deeds, they are more often found to be very destructive.

They have often been known to drive whole families insane in order to take up residence in their homes, and they can oftentimes only be be detected by their tails, which trail behind them no matter what shape they take.

Many artists have taken their inspiration from the stories of evil fairies and the harm they do.

Or instance, it can certain be seen that the famous artist Brian Froud sees both the good and bad sides of fairies. His depictions of the Unseelie court and its royalty is quite unsettling at times, and it does not take a leap of the imagination to think of these fairies wrecking a great deal of havoc on the people who encounter them.

Stephanie Law is another artist who realizes a great deal of beauty in the destructive nature of fairies, as is evident in her paintings of the kitsune.

If you are looking for some sort of evil art to hang on the wall, you can rest assured that it is definitely out there!
